AAP wins with support from 7 Congress councilors; Cabinet Minister Mundian officially announces Baljinder Singh Babbu’s name.

-A mountain of challenges awaits the new leader: An empty treasury and a sanitation workers’ strike have turned Faridkot into a garbage dump.
Faridkot (Alexander D’Souza): After a prolonged political tussle and the resolution of a case in the High Court, the Faridkot Municipal Council finally got a new President today. Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Baljinder Singh Babbu (Babbu Ahuja) was elected unopposed as the new President of the council. According to sources, AAP secured crucial support from seven Congress councilors during the election, which significantly paved the way for the party’s victory.
Cabinet Minister and local MLA extend congratulations:
The official announcement of this historic victory was made by Punjab Cabinet Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian. While congratulating the newly appointed President Baljinder Singh Babbu, he expressed hope that under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and party supremo Arvind Kejriwal, the new President would take development works in Faridkot city to new heights.
The local MLA, Gurditt Singh Sekhon, was also specially present on this occasion. He clarified that the verdict in the High Court case regarding the election had now gone entirely in the party’s favor. Celebrating this major victory, AAP workers distributed *laddus* and rejoiced.
A ‘crown of thorns’ for the new President; three major challenges lie ahead.
Although the Aam Aadmi Party has secured control of the Municipal Council, the journey ahead will not be easy for the new President, Babbu Ahuja. A mountain of challenges awaits him as soon as he assumes office. For now, the Council must immediately address three major crises:
Serial No. / Key Challenge / Current Situation and Impact:
1. Treasury on the brink of bankruptcy: The Municipal Council’s treasury is completely empty. The biggest challenge is fulfilling the recent promise made by the Improvement Trust to pay ₹1.5 crore in salaries to sanitation workers and steering the Council out of this financial crunch.
2. Crisis of a state-level strike: Local sanitation workers had already been on a prolonged 15-day strike due to non-payment of salaries. Although the strike was suspended for just one day following assurances from the administration, a state-level strike resumed the very next day.
3. City turned into a garbage dump: Due to the ongoing strikes, Faridkot city has currently transformed into a dumping ground. Piles of filth scattered across the city have created a severe pollution crisis, rapidly increasing the risk of disease outbreaks among local residents.
All eyes on the way forward:
It will be fascinating and challenging to see how the newly elected President, Babbu Ahuja-with the support of the Punjab government-steers Faridkot city out of this dual crisis of severe financial distress and the sanitation workers’ strike, and when the city’s residents will finally be relieved from this filth-ridden nightmare.
