Farmers Should Heed Expert Advice Rather Than Social Media: Speaker Sandhwan
Addressing a large gathering of farmers, Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan stated that agriculture is the finest profession in the world; however, in the modern era, farmers should not limit themselves solely to the cultivation of crops. He appealed to the farmers to venture into ‘agri-business’ and small-scale agro-based industries, thereby enabling them to determine the fair price of their produce themselves. He specifically emphasized that farmers should prioritize the advice of PAU scientists over the misleading information often circulated on social media platforms.
The Significance of Scientific Farming and Fairs:
MLA Gurdit Singh Sekhon remarked that farmers’ fairs serve as a vital link between scientists and farmers. Through these events, farmers gain access to accurate technical knowledge regarding new seed varieties, the proper application of fertilizers, and effective pest management strategies.
Presentation of New Crop Varieties by the University:
PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal shared insights into new varieties of Kharif crops and offered valuable marketing tips. He assured the farmers that the University remains ever-ready to address and resolve their concerns. Renowned international rice scientist Dr. Gurdev Singh Khush also emphasized the importance of agricultural diversification through the cultivation of fruits and vegetables. Key Highlights of the Fair:
Distribution of Improved Seeds: Farmers were provided with improved seeds for Kharif crops as well as vegetable kits.
Exhibitions: Approximately a dozen exhibitions showcasing new agricultural machinery and techniques were organized.
On-the-Spot Solutions: Agricultural experts addressed farmers’ queries and offered immediate solutions to their farming-related problems.
Cultural Flair: Folk dances and cultural programs were also presented to entertain the farmers.
