Faridkot, June 25 (Alexander D’Souza): A unique initiative was launched today at Central Jail, Faridkot, with the aim of truly transforming Punjab’s jails into ‘reformation centers’ and bringing positive changes to the lives of inmates. Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker S. Kultar Singh Sandhwa and Cabinet Minister (Jails) Dr. Ravjot Singh formally inaugurated the newly established library and ‘Radio Ujala’ here today.
Also present on this special occasion were Faridkot MLA S. Gurdit Singh Sekhon, DIG Surinder Singh Mand (IPS), and Deputy Commissioner Sh. Rahul Chaba.
These efforts will prove to be an excellent blend of knowledge and entertainment: Speaker Sandhwan
Addressing the function held at the jail, Speaker S. Kultar Singh Sandhwa stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Sh. Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab government is continuously working to improve the atmosphere within jails. He remarked that facilities like the library and radio would play a crucial role in connecting inmates to the social mainstream by providing them with knowledge, education, and entertainment. While ‘Radio Ujala’ will serve as a source of inspiration for the inmates, the library will cultivate an interest in reading among them. He urged the inmates to make full use of these facilities and to start a new life as good citizens upon their release.
Jail Minister tastes the food and addresses inmates’ grievances:
In his address, Jail Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh stated that jails are not merely places to serve sentences but are opportunities for self-improvement and becoming better human beings. The Punjab government is fostering an environment within prisons where inmates can realize their responsibilities toward their families and society.
Key highlights of the inspection:
Following the inauguration, the Jail Minister conducted a thorough inspection of the prison’s various barracks and sections. He interacted directly with the inmates, listened to their grievances, and assured them of a speedy resolution.
During the visit, he personally inspected the prison kitchen (mess) and tasted the food being prepared; the quality was found to be satisfactory.
Books to transform inmates’ future: MLA Sekhon
Faridkot MLA S. Gurdit Singh Sekhon lauded the initiative, stating that the primary objective of opening a library in the prison is to shape a better future for the inmates. By making constructive use of their time in prison, inmates can learn valuable lessons and eventually secure a respectable place in society.
Inmates captivate audience with ‘Malwai Giddha’; Cabinet Minister receives Guard of Honour
Great enthusiasm was evident among the inmates during the event. They presented a vibrant cultural program, showcasing their artistic talents through the traditional ‘Malwai Giddha’ dance and Punjabi songs. The inmates hailed the launch of ‘Radio Ujala’ and the library as a commendable initiative by the Punjab government. Earlier, upon his arrival at the prison complex, Cabinet Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh was accorded a ‘Guard of Honour’ by a Punjab Police contingent.

The dignified ceremony was attended by Market Committee Faridkot Chairman S. Amandeep Singh Baba, Jail Superintendent Iqbal Singh Dhillon, Additional Superintendent Rajdeep Singh Brar, along with senior officials from the Prison Department and other local dignitaries.
