Wheat Procurement in Faridkot Mandis Crosses 2.30 Lakh Metric Tonnes: Deputy Commissioner

Faridkot, April 22 (Alexander D’Souza): Under the guidelines of the Punjab government, the wheat procurement process is proceeding smoothly in the grain markets (mandis) of Faridkot district. Deputy Commissioner Ms. Poonamdeep Kaur reviewed the procurement arrangements today and stated that the district has crossed a significant milestone in terms of procurement.
Key Procurement Statistics (in Metric Tonnes):
The Deputy Commissioner informed that, as of yesterday evening, a total of 279,974 metric tonnes of wheat had arrived in the mandis, out of which 230,452 metric tonnes have already been procured by various agencies. The agency-wise details of the procurement are as follows:
Agency-wise Procurement (Metric Tonnes):
Pungrain- 74,088; Markfed- 60,243.75; Punsup- 55,338; Punjab State Warehouse Corporation- 38,282; Private Traders- 2,500.
Special Guidelines for Farmers:
In view of weather uncertainties and to ensure the preservation of crop quality, the administration has issued strict directives:
Time Limit: Wheat harvesting must be conducted only between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM.
Moisture Control: Farmers should bring wheat to the mandis only after it has dried completely, to avoid any delays in procurement caused by excessive moisture.
Appeal for Environmental Protection:
Making an earnest appeal to the farmers, Ms. Poonamdeep Kaur urged them strictly not to set fire to wheat crop residues (stubble/parali) after harvesting. She emphasized that burning stubble not only causes pollution but also destroys the fertility of the soil. She encouraged farmers to improve the health of their land by incorporating the stubble back into the fields. “The administration is committed to ensuring the convenience of farmers, commission agents, and laborers. Robust arrangements have been put in place regarding payments and lifting operations so that no one faces any difficulties within the mandis”: Ms. Poonamdeep Kaur, Deputy Commissioner.
Senior officials from various procurement agencies, including the District Food and Supply Controller (DFSC), S. Gurjit Singh, were also present during this review meeting.
