International Nurses Day Special: The Human Face of Service and Dedication…

The very concept of a hospital remains incomplete without that white uniform and the reassuring smile worn by the person we call a ‘Nurse.’ Today, May 12th, marks the day dedicated to those ‘backbones’ of the world-the individuals who shoulder the entire medical realm.
History: The Legacy of the ‘Lady with the Lamp’
The credit for elevating nursing to a position of respect and recognition goes to Florence Nightingale. During the Crimean War of the 1850s, this remarkable woman—who tended to the wounded while carrying a lantern—initiated a tradition that continues to save the lives of millions today.
1953: The day was first proposed by Dorothy Sutherland.
1974: May 12th was officially declared ‘International Nurses Day.’
A Strong Shield Between Illness and the Patient
While a doctor determines the course of treatment, it is the nurse who brings that treatment to fruition. According to Asha Rani, a retired Nursing Officer from Faridkot Medical College, the nursing staff constitutes the backbone of any hospital. Our true victory lies in enduring a patient’s irritability while still caring for them as if they were our own family.
The COVID Era: When Protectors Became Angels
During the COVID-19 pandemic—when the rest of the world was confined to their homes—these nurses were toiling for hours, sweating inside their PPE kits. They not only provided medical treatment but also set a new benchmark for humanity by performing the last rites for patients who had passed away, separated from their loved ones.
Why Is This Profession So Special?
The Pinnacle of Patience: Unwavering service rendered despite immense physical and mental pressure.
A Soldier’s Spirit: Standing guard within the wards, acting as a shield for patients battling against death.
Emotional Healing: More than medication, a nurse’s gentle demeanor and unwavering confidence play a pivotal role in a patient’s speedy recovery.
Our Pledge:
Today is not merely a day for a formal expression of gratitude; rather, it is a day to pledge our commitment to safeguarding the rights, safety, and dignity of nurses everywhere. Serving with a smile, even amidst challenging circumstances, is their true calling.
On behalf of ‘Yes News,’ we offer our deepest salutations to nurses across the globe for their selfless service.
