Faridkot (Alexander D’Souza): S. Gurdit Singh Sekhon, MLA for the Faridkot Assembly constituency, today formally inaugurated the government procurement of wheat at the local grain market (Mandi). Speaking on the occasion, he clarified that the Punjab government is fully committed to safeguarding the fruits of the farmers’ six months of toil and sweat, and to procuring every single grain of their harvest.
Robust Arrangements in Mandis; No Inconvenience for Farmers:
While initiating the procurement process, MLA Sekhon interacted with farmers, commission agents (Arhtiyas), and laborers. He stated that special attention has been paid to ensuring basic amenities and effective management within the mandis so that no stakeholder faces any inconvenience.
Key Highlights of the Report:
Expectation of Excellent Yield: The MLA noted that, due to adverse weather conditions, the season began slightly later than usual; however, the quality and yield of the wheat this time around are exceptionally impressive.
Appeal to Bring Dry Wheat: He urged farmers to bring fully dried wheat to the mandis so that procurement can be finalized on the spot, thereby eliminating the need for them to wait.
Assurance of Compensation: Addressing the damage caused by unseasonal rains and hailstorms, he stated that a special Girdawari (crop damage assessment) survey is being conducted on a priority basis, and relief funds will be released to the affected farmers shortly.
“Teams from the Central Government have also assessed the situation, and the State Government is working in close coordination with them to ensure that farmers face no hurdles regarding procurement regulations,” said Gurdit Singh Sekhon, MLA.
