Civil Surgeon Issues Advisory to Combat Heatwave; Robust Arrangements Made in Faridkot Government Hospitals…

Faridkot (Alexander D’Souza):
In view of the escalating heat and the scorching sun, the Health Department has gone on high alert. To protect the general public from the deadly impact of the heatwave (Loo), the department has launched a special awareness campaign. As part of this initiative, Civil Surgeon Dr. Ramandeep Singla released a special advisory and awareness poster at the Civil Surgeon’s office. Present on this occasion alongside him were Assistant Civil Surgeon Dr. Parvjit Singh Gulati and other senior officials of the department.
What is a Heatwave, and Why is it Dangerous?
Providing details, Dr. Ramandeep Singla explained that a ‘heatwave’ situation arises in the plains when the temperature reaches 40 degrees Celsius or higher.
“When the human body’s temperature regulation mechanism ceases to function due to excessive heat, a person falls victim to heatstroke. This condition is extremely critical and can even prove fatal,” stated Dr. Ramandeep Singla, Civil Surgeon.
These Groups Fall Under the ‘High-Risk’ Category:
According to the Health Department, certain sections of the population need to exercise extra caution during this season:
Newborns and young children,
Pregnant women,
The elderly (aged 65 years and above),
Laborers working outdoors in the sun, and individuals suffering from chronic illnesses.
Special Advice: Patients suffering from epilepsy, heart, kidney, or liver ailments should strictly consult their doctor before increasing their fluid intake.
Civil Surgeon’s Key Guidelines for Prevention
To stay safe during a heatwave, the Health Department has urged the public to incorporate the following practices into their daily routine:
Continuous Hydration: Keep drinking water every half hour, even if you do not feel thirsty. Always carry a water bottle with you when stepping out of the house.
Appropriate Attire: Wear light-colored, full-sleeved cotton clothing that covers the body adequately. When stepping outdoors, cover your head with an umbrella, a cap, or a scarf, and never venture out barefoot.
Dietary Precautions: Ensure that your body remains adequately hydrated. Consume seasonal fruits—such as watermelon, cucumber, oranges, and muskmelons—in abundance.
Work Schedule Adjustments: Avoid working directly under the sun during the afternoon hours. Complete any essential outdoor tasks during the cooler parts of the day—either in the morning or in the evening.
Special Arrangements in Hospitals
Reassuring the residents of the district, the Civil Surgeon stated that adequate and robust arrangements have been put in place across all government hospitals in Faridkot for the treatment of heatstroke patients. Emergency wards have been placed on high alert. Furthermore, the Health Department’s mass media team and field staff are continuously engaged in raising awareness among the public at the grassroots level.
